Competition with Other Colonies
New England - Have very good education but doesn't have very good soil for farming or making crops. There is also very strict religion in some of the colonies, such as Massachusetts.
1)New Hampshire- You could have a pretty simple life in this colony, but there is also very hard work that follows. Mainly known and founded for a fishing colony. They are very loyal to England and your beliefs had to be the same as England. Focused jobs ae mainly fishing and shipbuilding and exportation of rum, so this is not a very good place for you if you were a farmer. You had to be Puritan or Presbyterian and be willing to do anything and everything for your colony. Doesn't that sound like TOO much work?
Middle - Also known as the 'Bread Basket' colonies for there is very fertile soil (but the most fertile soil is in New Jersey!). Also, there are a few slaves, but a lot less than the Southern.
2) Delaware- They are represented as the Lower Counties for they are a very independent colony for they have their own assemblies. They did not want representatives but leaders as their governor. Pretty good soil for farming (but not good enough) and you could have other jobs such as shipbuilding (for there are large forests) and fishing (for there are many rivers). You also had to be a Lutheran or Quaker to live here. Because of Quakers, you had to do a lot of work in order to live a good life for Quakers did not allow slaves because their rules about equality were very strict.
Southern - The Southern Colonies was split into 2 sections: the Tidewater Plantations and the Backcountry. The Tidewater Plantations were located by the coast and had fertile soil in which they planted cash crops. The farmers were wealthy had a lot of slaves in their large plantations. The Backcountry was located in the inlands and had a simple lifestyle. Both men and women tended the fields because they were poorer.
3) North Carolina- Because of the plantations, there was a big difference in social classes. Enslaving innocent people from Africa is immoral. We believe that everybody had their own rights. The slaves were treated badly and it was unfair that the owners had money for private schools. But the slaves were illiterate and worked long hours. New Jersey has religious freedom. Instead, you had to be Presbyterian or Quaker to be welcomed into North Carolina. If you like free form of government, this is not a place for you.
4) Georgia- Founded mainly for debtors who wanted a second chance in life. But had many slaves that were hired to grow crops in plantations. Although the work is hard, it is suitable for non-Catholics who likes freedom over easy life (in other words it means it's hard to live). They also have a very weird government for they it is run by a group of trustees who makes the decisions for the colony.
