Life as a Colonist
There are different levels in society such as the gentry, middle class, and indentured servants. The top of the society were the gentries and included the wealthy planters, merchants, ministers, lawyers and royal officers. These people were richer and usually known to other colonists.
Most of the colonists (3/4ths) were part of the middle class. Some examples include the farmers, artisans, and some trade people. These are the average males who worked and lived a simple, but comfortable lifestyle.
The lowest social class was called the indentured servants. The people who help around the farm called farmhands, indentured servants, and slaves were part of this level. The difference between slaves and indentured servants is that the indentured servants sign a contract to work without wages for 4-7 years to their temporary "owner" so they are able to come to the Americas. The slaves are usually from Africa and are enslaved for life.
Here in New Jersey, we have slaves who help with our agricultural economy. But compared to the South, we had a little amount of slaves. The South based their economy on slaves. We, as New Jersey don't believe in slavery. So we only have a minimum amount.

Are you wondering if you'll fit in New Jersey? Here are some suggestions when becoming a colonist here. You need to listen to the governor and not cause trouble. You must accept other religions.
We want anyone who is willing to work hard and be a farmer in the business of export. We are open to all the colonists who want religious freedom. And people who aren't afraid to try something new and will do their best in their job. |
