Economy
New Jersey was part of the Middle Colonies who called themselves the "Bread-Basket Colonies." This was because we exported so much grain. The farmers grew cash crops such as wheat, barley, and rye. We also have meat such as beef and pork and our delicious butter.
Other colonies
The New England Colonies were the fishing colonies. The northern region wasn't suitable for farming because of the rocky, poor soil and cold winters. Instead, they had fish the coast and build ships with the lumber from the thick forests. Their main export business came from their fishing and whale oil sold for lamps .
Yes, fishing and shipbuilding are important but we are able to feed ourselves. We don't have to wait for season or time of day to fish and have moderate temperatures that are just right for farming. The Southern colonies can make money off of their cash crops but the colonists there, depend on the slaves to do all the work. We work to survive and who doesn't like a nice hot, slice of buttered bread?
